Either/Or

This is a game my firend Ian thought up on very long hikes. So, here is the Drunk Writer Version of Either/Or:

Christian Bale or Eric Bana

The first season of Dexter or The first season of The Wire

The first season of Dexter or the first season of Battlestar Gallactica

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Laura Kinsale

Laura Kinsale or Elizabeth Hoyt

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Jenny Cruise

Young Marlon Brando or Young Paul Newman

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia or Sophie's Choice

Season One of Lost or any season of True Blood

Elizabeth Berg or Alice Hoffman

Hugh Laurie or Colin Firth

Oooh.. love this game

Eric Bana - he has a sense of humor.

The first season of Dexter.

The first season of Battlestar(no surprise)

Susan Elizabeth Phillips... it might have something to do with the fact that I'm reading Dream a Little Dream right now.

Laura Kinsale

SEP

Young Paul Newman

Mamma Mia - Sophie's Choice.. a parent's worst nightmare,

True Blood,

Elizabeth Berg

Colin Firth

I'll go with Bale (I have a thing for jerks.)

Wire

Dexter

Kinsale

Hoyt - see you left me the opening of having Kinsale and Hoyt.

SEP

Newman all the way - Long Hot Summer is probably in my top 10 movie list of all time.

Meryl - in anything but those two.

Tough one... Love TB but... Season 1 of Lost was amazing.

Berg

Colin Firth - BBC Pride and Prejudice version.

Oh, Fun!

Christian Bale or Eric Bana

Um, can I pick neither? Guess I'll go for Bale, Sinead can keep Bana. At one point I had enough mentions of Bale on my blog that I came up on the first page of google searches for Christian Bale... but he scares me a little. So intense.

The first season of Dexter or The first season of The Wire

Tough one. Think I have to go with Dexter, though. If for accessibility while being shocking, if nothing else.

The first season of Dexter or the first season of Battlestar Gallactica

Another tough one. Loved both. Have to stick with Dexter.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Laura Kinsale

I don't feel qualified on these next ones... But think I'm going with Kinsale.

Laura Kinsale or Elizabeth Hoyt

Kinsale, but you did make me think...

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Jenny Cruise
SEP for the books, (it's all about Ain't She Sweet for me) Jenny for the personality and mentorship and support of new authors.

Young Marlon Brando or Young Paul Newman
My gut reaction was Brando. But if we're talking long term relationship and not just one fantasy night.. (because this is all so real) I'll take Newman. (Apologies to Joanne Woodward.)

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia or Sophie's Choice
Postcards from the Edge. What? It wasn't a choice???

Season One of Lost or any season of True Blood

Oh, this is VERY tough. But think I'm actually going with Lost. Broke more new ground I think.

Elizabeth Berg or Alice Hoffman
Alice Hoffman

Hugh Laurie or Colin Firth
Colin. Hands down. No competition.... Oh, was I picking a boyfriend or judging their acting? Hmmm.. Might stick with my answer either way.

LOL on Sinead's answer for Meryl Streep.

Molly gave us Sophie's choice to make!

Christian Bale or Eric Bana

Eric Bana all the way. Munich, anyone? So intense. So handsome. So in need of my good and pure love to cure his anguish.

The first season of Dexter or The first season of The Wire

Dexter. The Wire was too unrelenting for me. Dexter has that wonderful spark of oh-so-very-sick humor that I just adore.

The first season of Dexter or the first season of Battlestar Gallactica

Tougher. I'm still going with Dexter. As much as I loved BG and as huge as that universe was, I'm still going with Dex. I think I like the tiny twisty psychological stuff more than the big stuff.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Laura Kinsale

SEP, but in all fairness, I haven't read Laura Kinsale.

Laura Kinsale or Elizabeth Hoyt

Haven't read either of them. Are you going to kick me out of the club?

Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Jenny Cruise

Ooh. Tough. I think I'm still going with SEP. I adore the earlier Jenny Crusie books (Welcome to Temptation, Tell Me Lies, Drive Me Crazy), but the latest batch (Don't Look Down, Bet me, Faking It) have all left me a little cold.

Young Marlon Brando or Young Paul Newman

Paul Paul Paul. It will always always be Paul. Exodus? Hud? Cool Hand Luke? OMG!

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia or Sophie's Choice

Sophie's Choice. I love me my Meryl, but she probably shouldn't sing. She was adorably in those overalls, though.

Season One of Lost or any season of True Blood

Lost. That first season blew me away. Plus I can watch it with my kids which I definitely can't do with TB.

Elizabeth Berg or Alice Hoffman

I'm going Alice Hoffman. I was going to complain about how difficult the choice was (a parent's worse nightmare, indeed!) until I realized I was combining Elizabeth Berg and Anita Shreve into one author.

Hugh Laurie or Colin Firth

Colin. Absolutely unequivocally Colin.

I love it - even though you guys have it so wrong...Paul Newman? HAve you seen Street Car Named Desire?

Here's my list:
Bana - for Munich because he needs my pure love too.

Wire. You guys are nuts. NUTS!

Dexter. Though - this was my toughest call.

SEP - because Dream a Little Dream is the best romance ever. And even though the next three on my list are Kinsale - nothing can touch Dream a Little Dream.

Kinsale - no Eileen we won't kick you out - but you should read these books.

Brando. Always always Brando.

Five years ago - Sophie's Choice. Now, because I cry at Biggest Loser episodes - Mamma Mia. Singing Dancing Stellan Skaarsgard is all I can handle.

Lost - honestly, Sinead, really? True Blood? Lost's first season was AMAZING. Best thing we'd seen in eons. I think your disappointment in that show has changed your memory.

Elizabeth Berg

Colin Firth

I have seen Streetcar and I totally get your point, but I counter with Hud and the fact that we all know who aged better. :-)

As to Kinsale and Hoyt, well, fine. I'm going to the library today.

Molly O'Keefe said...

Eileen - I see your HUD and I raise you a Guys and Dolls.

But you're absolutely right - Newman aged WAAAY better.

You won't regret finding Kinsale - The Shadow and The Star will probably change your life. Flowers From The Storm probably will too. And Seize The Fire...

Stephanie Doyle said...

Eileen - totally kicking you out. Sorry. It's been fun getting to know you and all...

Of course this is said from the person who just read and fell in love with Kinsale this past year.

For Hoyt - The Raven Prince.

For Kinsale - the one Maureen told me about and then forgot she told me about.

The hero who was abducted and abused as a boy and the shop girl. Might be in my top 20 of all time.

And Molly - you are WAY off the track with Brando. Take away away the sweaty wife-beater and all you've got is a bad NY accent.

Paul Newman - shirtless in LHS singing to who would eventually be his wife Joanne outside her window...

Clara... Claara... Clahahara....

OMG. HOT HOT HOT!

Eileen said...

Steph, if I back your play on Newman and promise to read Kinsale this week, will you let me stay? Pretty Please.

Regardless, Molly, I see your Guys and Dolls and raise you The Sting. I believe I'll call right now. :-)

Stephanie Doyle said...

Eileen yes! Let's double team Molly (is that sounding too kinky for a family friendly site?)

Molly - keep your Street Car and Dolls.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid... BAM!

Molly O'Keefe said...

okay - you're right - it's all about that wife beater. But here's a tough one --

young Paul Newman or young Robert Redford?

Steph the book you're thinking of is Shadow and The Star.

Eileen said...

Butch Cassidy, oh yeah!

Young RR vs. Young PN? I don't know if I can make that choice, but again if you choose who aged better, it's gotta be Paul. Plus he made a damn fine light red wine vinaigrette that's a staple at my house.

Maureen McGowan said...

OH, you guys are cracking me up. I was in the car all day and missed the poker bets. Hilarious.

Eileen, I just read my first Kinsale after Molly and Sinead raving about her for, like, 7 years. The Shadow and the Star. That was the one that sold me.

But I think Molly needs some back up on the Brando thing. He was totally my gut reaction when I saw the two names together. PN is almost too pretty. Brando was dangerous and sexy. (but also crazy and aged REALLY badly.)
